"Chronostasis" a photography exhibition by AXEL HÜTTE
For the first time exhibited in Italy, Axel Hütte's photographs pay homage to the beauty of Greco-Roman archaeological sites.
There are places that I still remember decades later. The archaeological sites in Asia Minor were a unique, unforgettable experience. Thanks to numerous special permits, I was able to take pictures in Aphrodisias, Sagalassos, Ephesus and Hierapolis, among others, early in the morning and late at night, accompanied only by my team.
Years ago, I saw Candida Höfer's photographs in a surprising presentation at the Fondazione Bisazza. Now, I am delighted to have been invited to a solo exhibition showcasing the photographs of former metropolises of the Roman Empire, which are now ruined cities or archaeological sites.
Axel Hütte
Axel Hütte, born in Essen in 1951, is one of the most influential German photographers of his generation. Trained at the renowned Kunstakademie Düsseldorf under the mentorship of Bernd and Hilla Becher, Hütte is known for his landscapes and architectural photography that explore the relationship between space, light, and symmetry. In recent years, he has focused on capturing the timeless beauty of ancient archaeological sites, particularly those of Greco-Roman origin in Asia Minor. His photographs of these sites not only document their historical significance but also evoke a sense of wonder and reverence, offering a profound reflection on the enduring legacy of these ancient civilizations. Hütte's works, exhibited in galleries and museums worldwide, blend a rigorous documentary approach with an aesthetic that borders on abstraction.
The exhibition, curated by Filippo Maggia, is presented with the patronage of the Goethe-Institut Mailand.
