The Collection of Architectural Photography

The photography collection is part of the wonderful experience of visiting the Bisazza Foundation. It was initiated by its President, Piero Bisazza, to reflect his passion for photography and the dialogue existing between photography and architecture. The space is dedicated to several ensembles by renowned photographers, which give the visitor a rich overview of different approaches to this subject.

It spans from early-twentieth-century photography with Eugène Atget whose work has been a constant inspiration and reference for generations of photographers. He documented the streets and buildings of Paris in a distinctive and precise way using the tradition of strict composition, perspective, and balanced light to highlight the forms of the buildings.

Examples from the collection include also the historical perspective of Berenice Abbott, documenting New York in the early thirties. Her night view of the city is a timeless tribute to New York and its spectacular architecture and energy.

Her work differs from that of the Italian photographer Gabriele Basilico, who has a more critical approach to the transformation of the urban and architectural space of a city.

Other highlights include the large-format library photographs by Candida Höfer representing the objective and strict documentary approach of the Düsseldorf photography school and the influence of the masters Bernd and Hilla Becher.

A generous space is also dedicated to the work of the Japanese artist Hiroshi Sugimoto whose formal view on architecture makes us reflect on the universal beauty, forms, and stylistic language of some of the milestones of modern buildings by Le Corbusier, Frank Lloyd Wright, and Mies van der Rohe.

All of these different views assembled successfully in a dedicated space of the Foundation are inspiring us to look at architecture and beauty in a more profound and contemplative way.”
